Gr 9 Up—Two series openers offer gender inclusivity, in creators and content, into the mainstream superheroes comic book world. These stories showcase how both main characters undergo a process of self-identification and searching for a role within their own respective worlds. In Ms. Marvel, which collects issues #1–5, Wilson introduces readers to Kamala Kahn, a Pakistani American teenage girl from New Jersey. In this adventure, she initially transforms into Carol Danvers's Captain Marvel, a white superheroine who Kamala admires and is responsible for giving the teen the power to evolve. Kamala encounters external and internal transformations to accept and create her own persona as a teen and as a superheroine. Captain Marvel, which contains issues #1–6, offers new adventures with the infamous Carol Danvers, who was orginally introduced as Ms. Marvel in the 1970s. In her writing, DeConnick portrays a self-determined and bold character who is committed to her heroic duty. Here, Captain Marvel is on a mission to save a girl and to return her to her planet, which then shifts to a story of discovery, critique of diplomatic relations, and a special appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Both illustrators, Alphona and Lopez, imbue the proceedings with vibrancy and showcase the now official aesthetics of Ms. Marvel's and Captain Marvel's outfits. VERDICT Fun and much-needed comic series that defy the typical oversexualization and damsel in distress archetype of women in comics.—Sujei Lugo, Boston Public Library, MA

This might be the best series Marvel has going...
By J'aime
I purchased the first two trades of DeConnick's new, Marvel Now Captain Marvel series (Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: In Pursuit of Flight and Captain Marvel, Vol. 2: Down) and thought both were excellent. Though I am enjoying several of the heroine-led Marvel titles, Captain Marvel is easily the best. I will never understand why Marvel "relaunched" this series with another #1 issue BY THE SAME WRITER, but I am happy to see it continue as the quality is outstanding.
The stories just keep improving and I found this volume to be even better than the first two. There is more action, more excitement, more character development - the subtitle is perfect because there is just MORE. Carol, who is maybe/kinda in a relationship with Rhodey (Iron Patriot), knows she needs to get her act together and decide who she wants to be and what she wants from life. So, when Tony Stark suggests they need an Avenger presence out in space, liaising with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Carol decides she'll be the first to take a solo rotation. Her first task is to take an alien, who arrived on Earth in a coma, back to her "home." That simple objective will team her with the Guardians, entangle her in galactic politics, and earn the ire of J'Son, Emperor of Spartax. Along the way she will take on an armada, make some friends and win one for the good guys.
Overall, I cannot get enough of Carol Danvers and really regret not buying the series in single issues from the beginning. Highly recommended!

Great artwork, Fun action filled story. I love it and am now a Captain Marvel fan.
By Ash
I’ve recently started reading graphic novels/comics. Always been a big fan of superheros and being a chick I’ve been the biggest fan of female superheroes. Especially if they can hold there own. There is something wonderful seeing female superheroes be feminine and kick butt. Protecting civilians from injustice just like their male counterparts. Of course the first ones I enjoyed where She-Ra and Wonder Woman . As I explore more into the Marvel and DC universe I’ve come across some really cool ones.
Before I picked this graphic novel up all I knew about Captain Marvel was she was apart of the Avengers and she was supposedly bad a**. I have to say she hits all the points in what I like in a female superhero.
Captain Marvel/ Carol Danvers seems to be at point in her life where she doesn’t know what she wants. She’s restless and needs to clear her head. When the opportunity to go to space and be the go between with the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy she took it. Captain Marvel was in charge of taking a young alien who fell to earth in a capsule and was in a coma back to her home. This brought Captain Marvel to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Get swept up in some galactic politics, some great action scenes including a bad ass stand off and in the end gains some friends.
As my first Captain Marvel comic/graphic novel I very much enjoyed it. The story line was great. The characters we are introduced to are wonderful. Captain Marvel herself was funny, loyal, strong, charming and completely kick a**. There was no cliffhanger at the end, but you know you can expect more wonderful adventures. The artwork was great. And I think Captain Marvel has the best costume out of all the super heroines so far that I’ve seen.I’ll be picking up the and keeping up with this version of Captain Marvel.
I’d recommend this to anyone who maybe new to the whole comic/graphic novel thing. I’m not sure how those who read the past ones feel about this but being a new fan I love it. Its fun, visually pleasing, has great action scenes and a great story.

Captain Marvel goes cosmic
By Dan Pace (feral atom)
Collects the series #1-6. Extras include 5 alternate covers (Lenil Yu's cover for #1 is on the obverse of #4's cover).
Marvel rebooted the series again, this time setting Captain Marvel into outer space adventures, which I definitely like. Captain Marvel should be a cosmic superhero and I can't recall Marvel ever having a female solo title in outer space before.
The good:
David Lopez did the first 6 issues, giving consistency to the look of the collection. Lopez does fantastic covers and the alternate covers were excellent as well. Chewie, Carol's cat, (a holdover from the last series) is awesomely drawn by Lopez and is a great addition to the story. Jackie (Jae Kyee) seems interesting - I'd like to see her character explored more.
Harrison, the ship, seems like it has a decent amount of potential. So far, DeConnick has pushed the sentient ship in new territory and appears to have additional plans.
The plight of the refugees was well-done and much of the dialog and storyline was interesting. The Sentimault, Nowlians, and Haffensye were interesting new aliens. Stir in a desperate and shaken Spartoi empire and we have fireworks.
There were a lot of guest-stars: Iron Patriot, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Woman.
The Star Wars references are many. Some may legitimately say too many. I liked them.
The bad:
Not enough action. No real villain (J'son's hologram doesn't count :) A hero is only as good as their villain.
Too much talking. Perhaps DeConnick's concept is to have Captain Marvel solve situations by using problem-solving and relationship-building more, but she is one of Marvel's most powerful heroes. She doesn't use her powers nearly enough in these first six issues.
Tic is introduced in #1 but never really developed in this arc.
The ugly:
Gil, who is a large Torfa refugee, but never shown to be superhumanly strong, knocks down Captain Marvel with a single punch, not once but twice!! She is supposed to be class 50-90. Luke Cage at 25. I can't imagine showing a normal strength character knocking down these characters and they aren't nearly as strong as her, according to marvel wikia.
Iron Patriot and Iron Man were a bit patronizing to her in the opening issue.
Don't get me wrong: this series is light-hearted, thought-provoking and world-building all in one. There's a lot of promise here. I hope we see Captain Marvel brought to its full potential in later issues.
The first issue had more pre-orders than She-Hulk #1, Wolverine & the X-men #1, Savage Hulk#1 and Secret Avengers #1, all launched within months of each other (44k for Captain Marvel), but suffered the largest drop-off to #2 out of those titles (36% to 28k). #1 was confusing for new readers and carried over plotlines from the last run of the title. At issue's end, these plotlines are abandoned and a new arc kicked off. It's possible this was the reason for the large drop-off, which is a shame because the story picked up steam when DeConnick had her in space.
The latest numbers show Captain Marvel surging with 3 out of the last 5 months having increased pre-orders (#9-13), so hopefully this title is catching on. Carol Danvers has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters throughout her various incarnations. Recommended.
