Ignore the other review - he misses the point of this book

William Tan has given this book 1 star because it does not include pre formatted spreadsheets to look at. This completely misses the point as in the "Preface"of the book the author makes clear that this book is all about learning by doing: contextual learning. The author intends the reader to literally work through each example as you go. So pre formatted spreadsheets misses the point of the book.

Mr Soubeiga's experience at the World Bank is evident in the clear and logical way things have been laid out. Most young financial analysts learn on the job from bosses who have little detailed knowledge to teach. The result is that juniors end up inheriting bad Excel habits that can be difficult to reverse. This book will help you learn a logical approach to model building right from the get go that will help to avoid errors and spot them more easily should you mess up.

Of particular interest are the following worked examples: an LBO buyout, debt covenants, cash sweep analysis, share buybacks, investment valuations.

The book contains two minor errors (text typos, not model errors) which I have spotted (which is a far better success rate than most other financial modelling / excel books I've read which are full of errors). Neither is particularly material to understanding the examples.

I loved reading this book

I loved reading this book. The 'do-it-yourself' philosophy of the book is really commendable and if someone wants to learn financial modeling, then he should buy this book. It is also good that no ready-made templates are there, for otherwise, one starts using the templates directly and do not understand the model properly. This is a good book for the MBA students who want to learn financial modeling.
There is scope for improvement in the book, however. The figures are too small and one really needs a magnifying glass to read them. Of course, each figure is properly explained elsewhere in the book. But bigger font size would make this book a best-seller.

A MUST HAVE!

I am fortunate to still own my original copy, especially since it has long been out of print and extremely costly to replace. But if you are a fan of Tom Savini and the horror genre it is worth owning. Stephen King provides the introduction and George Romero writes the preface. Tom Savini takes over describing his love for the art and how he developed his interest in make-up special effects. Filled with incredible and rare photos, the book takes us on a step-by-step process on how to recreate the gruesome F/X that made him famous. The book also reflects a humorous and playful side of Tom Savini as he demonstrates what he does best.

The special effects from "Deathdream," "Dreanged," "Martin," "Dawn of the Dead," "The Burning," "The Prowler," "Creepshow," "Maniac," "Eyes of a Stranger," and "Friday the 13th" are all featured here. Also included is a scrapbook of Tom Savini's work and off-the-wall creations.

Everything you ever wanted to know about special effects is in here. From Simple illusions such as making people's head look realistically severed in a fish tank, to more complex illusions such as the famous helicopter decapitation in the original DAWN OF THE DEAD. This book is jam-packed with information and rare behind the scenes photos of all his earliest movies, including Tom's stunt work on DAWN OF THE DEAD.
It includes in depth moldmaking lessons including life-casting a human head with clear and logically progressing photos indicating the actions. Also included are simplistic animatronic designs for the spectre nicknamed Raoul to the more comple "Fluffy" from the story THE CRATE from Creepshow. Among the many photos get a kick out writer Stephen King being attacked in the makeup room by a zombie and see the many faces of "Boris the Stunt Dummy" who was blown up, shot up, run over with a semi-truck and decapitated numerous times for the original DAWN OF THE DEAD.

Awesome book, Great for FX students & fans

This book is a manual for every horror fan, FX student, and lover of Savini around. I was lucky enough to get a copy of this from my schools bookstore, and might i say, what a find! Explained in gory detail, every effect is uncovered. The book has many hpotos, most in black in white, some in nice bloody color! Lots to look at, and plently to read about, this book is THE BEST! Even if your not into special FX, I'm sure you've seen the horror movies he's done, and its worth reading to find out how this talented man created these effects.

Great Book, Despite Flaws

I've just begun perusing this book and although I'm always excited to add a new title to my crochet library, I am disappointed with the proofreading and editing of this book. After a cursory review, I have already discovered multiple typos. For example, "Row 1 (RS): Skip 2 ch, (count as 1 hdc) 1htr into next ch, 1 hdc into each ch to end, turn. Row 2: Ch2, 1 hdc into back bar under top loops of each hdc to end, turn." That's the pattern, but there's no other mention of the "htr," nor does it appear in the accompanying diagram. I've come across several like that; so far they're pretty easily deciphered, either through common sense or the use of the symbol pattern. However, I'm not sure whether all such typos will be so innocuous, once I start working through the various stitches, motifs, and edging.

As the other reviewer mentioned, the wording is a bit unusual, though understandable. One other point worth mentioning: some of the symbol charts/diagrams have been reduced dramatically to fit on the page. I am hoping the smallest and more complex motif patterns will be easily and precisely enlarged, via scanning or copying. Btw, I'm under 40 and do not typically have to enlarge text or images for clarity.

On the plus side, the color photos are crisp and clear; there is a an accompanying crochet symbol diagram for each listing; and, in the beginning of the book, there is a section with detailed explanations of the symbols, stitches, and terms used. I'm pleased and excited to have this title in my collection and recommend it to others.

500 CROCHET STITCHES

Over all, gathered stitch books and put them together in one book to combine and eliminate bulk of other single stitch books.
Symbols to stitch patterns have been made and are much smaller. I LOVE SYMBOL CROCHET CHARTS MYSELF.
No pattern projects but you can figure something out on you own.
VERY NICE STITCH BOOK with ALL the stitch patterns in one place.
Would still recommend it.

Stuck on stitches

The explanation of the stitches is rather vague since I'm a new crocheter many are difficult to follow. I wish they explained the way to follow a pattern in a simpler form.

Leonardo da Vinci is recognized as the quintessential Renaissance Man. A great painter, he was equally prodigious in the fields of architecture, engineering, anatomy, and physical science.

H. Anna Suh has a master's degree in art and archaeology from Princeton University. She was on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has worked on projects for scholarly publications at the Met, New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, the Princeton University Art Museum, and Harvard University. A Sensitively Tailored Version of the da Vinci Notebooks

Though there are other publications that include the entire series of notebooks maintained as a diary of thoughts and concepts, puzzles, dreams and creative ideas by the great Leonardo da Vinci, this publication under the astute editorship of H. Anna Suh condenses the notebooks, focusing on most of the truly profound writings of the artist. The quality of production in transposing old paper to new is excellent with respectful use of sepia tone and black and white reproductions that make the book eminently readable.

da Vinci's Notebooks contain some of the more far-reaching thinking of his day, ideas about flight, acoustics, astronomy, and architecture that weren't completely realized for centuries after his death. These are the notes of a genuine genius, a man who not only understood his art but also understood anatomy on a scientific level far beyond the scientists of his time.

But all of this is merely fact and information we have all known for a long time. The reason for recommending this particular volume is the quality of illustration control, the footnotes, the capable translations of da Vinci's notes, and the generous manner in which the material is laid out on the page. This is not only, then, an important book exploring da Vinci's history and mind, it is also an homage to the master's drawing, philosophy, and genteel brain that dared to explore areas of thought long before others attempted. Yet another unfortunate truncation of Leonardo's notebooks

It is possible, with only a few pages from Leonardo Da Vinci's many notebooks, to do away with all other books on the subject of information design. In this way, if you plan to "learn so you can practice," this book or any other book on Leonardo's notebooks will not only be sufficient but will outclass everything else.

If you want a book specifically about Leonardo's notebooks, however, this book is all-too truncated. There simply aren't enough representations of his work to really "dig in" and see how he was able to cross intellectual barriers while retaining the same perspective. You'll get a handful of examples, and if you bought any of dozen or so similar books you'll mostly see the same examples repeated in each one.

My recommendation to anyone wanting a semi-thorough collection (for no full collection exists to my knowledge) is to hunt around your local antique and used book stores. I was able to acquire a massive volume of Leonardo's works, called simply Leonardo Da Vinci (published in 1956 by Reynal & Company) which has around 1,500 examples of notebook pages and various sketches along with essays and descriptions in each of the major fields (human and animal anatomy and physiology, warfare, engineering, structures, and more). It cost about twice as much as a modern collection (such as this one) and is many, many times more thorough. I only wish such thoroughness was more readily available and didn't require months of searching.

In all, this book (which I gifted to a friend who didn't ask as much of it as I did) is worthwhile if you only need a glance at Leonardo's notebooks. If you want to take a good look, you'll need to do so elsewhere.

Terrible, disappointing at best

I bought this for the Kindle app on my iPad 3 device expecting to see the illustrations I saw in the soft cover book I found with the same name at a museum store. What I expected and what I received are two different things. None of the cool diagrams in the printed book are present in this version of the book for the Kindle app on the iPad. It's really a false statement to say this kindle book is illustrated.

Great Study Tool

This is an absolute must have for law students. European Union Law is a difficult concept for many U.S. students. This book, although written from a British perspective, provides an excellent overview of the system and some key concepts.

It is lacking in explaining some key cases and case law. Use your casebook to supplement this.

It is also slightly dated. Make sure you review Turkey's EU integration and European human rights on your own.

An excellent intro, and certainly the most comprehensive study tool currently available.

A Good Euro Primer

The book is a good Euro Primer from a respected European journalist. It certainly educates in easily readable prose of the Euro s origins, its governance weaknesses, regional political rivalries, mainly between Germany and France, and a forecast as to how it all might end. It gives a Europeans' view of all these goings on, which to an American, is illuminating. Recommended.

Overtveldt: The Inherent Flaws of the EMU will Undo the Euro

Johan Van Overtveldt makes the very complicated economics of the euro intelligible to the lay person. For this alone, the book deserves 5 stars. He shows how the euro's initial success masked the EMU's underlying problems and how the fiscal crisis brought its inherent weaknesses out from under the table.

He first shows how Europe's "Economic and Monetary Union" was not fully based on economics or monetary policy. Many of the founders were pursuing political goals (a prototype for a more unified Europe, prevention of war, etc.) which forced political, not economic, decisions from the very beginning, a practice which continues today. For instance, entrance requirements were waived or fudged in order to expand the continental footprint; the "no bailout" policies are being waived in order to hold the union together.

Van Overtveldt makes a convincing case that the EMU depends on Germany. There is growing percepion in Germany that the costs of the EMU are out of proportion to its benefits. Soon, he expects, Germany's political leaders will lose patience with the the other member nations, leave the EMU and restore the Deutsche Mark.

The author makes his point up front. He shows how his conclusion is based on the full history of not just the EMU, but other monetary unions. He shows how a currency needs unified policies behind it, not just monetary, but also trade, employment, public finance and banking as well, something a mere currency provider cannot deliver.

The End of the Euro

As the economic crisis in Europe reverberates from country to country, you might wonder how it will all end. Belgian journalist Johan Van Overtveldt says it inevitably will end in tears. The title of his book may give away the author's conclusion, but, before he convinces you of his prognostication, he carefully lays out the reasons for the founding of the European Union and explains how well-intentioned but shortsighted politicians set a plan in motion that was doomed from the start. He spares no one in his scathing assessment of the mishandling of the crisis that began in 2009, but he assigns particular fault to European leaders' inability to put aside nationalist interests for the sake of the union. If you wish to understand more deeply what's happening to the euro, getAbstract recommends reading this sobering but realistic appraisal of Europe's present and future.

Great Info Here if you want to know

Learning about the real earth we live on is fascinating. Do we really live on a planet ? ~ or has something extraordinary been hidden for 500 yrs.under the control of a few in powerful places? What are the facts and proofs? When you look up to the sky are we really traveling over 1000 miles an hour on a spin? Are we also traveling around the sun at 67,000 mph ?? And then around the Milky Way at 514,000 mph???~ with not even the slightest hair out of place? Why doesn't the atmosphere fly off our "planet" when we are surrounded by a vacuum of unfathomable measure.Great Info Here if you want to know.
