For centuries, the elite of the world have sought the Pimpernel everywhere. Some want to kill him, others want to hire him, but Jack Cavanaugh knows that the love/hate relationship comes with the job title.
At present, Jack is trying to dismantle an investment scheme centered in Las Vegas, but "trying" is the operative word. It's been a month since he put the face of the scheme behind bars, yet the scam is still going strong. As Jack tries to uncover who has stepped in as the new head, what miniscule evidence there is all seems to point him back to Claire Ramsey, an introverted PhD student studying at UNLV.
If ever there as an unlikely head of an investment scheme, Claire's it. She has a genius IQ, but from all Jack has seen, Claire’s intelligence is as much a blessing as a curse when paired up with her acute OCD. Claire can barely make conversation with the cute guy down the hall, which makes it hard to believe she could be the charismatic salesperson who is getting international businessmen to invest $5—50 million a pop.
So what is Jack missing? What is the real story behind Claire Ramsey? And once Jack learns it, will he be able to walk away?

I'm Obsessing Over This Book
By Jessie C
So much intrigue, and a touch of romance. This book read like a movie to me. A touch of Ocean's Eleven, Mission Impossible, and the misdirection of Now You See Me. I loved the fast pace, the technology, and the disguises. It really would come to life on the screen.
The characters were well developed, especially Claire. I really felt like I understood her, and the way she saw the world.
The Pimpernel does stand alone, but I would love it if this became the start of this series. There is so much more potential for intrigue.
Content: clean (no language, some kissing, mention of infidelity-not the hero or heroine)

This could be a movie!

Note: I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review.
I decided to read this book because I liked a previous work from the author. But, wow, am I doubly glad I agreed to read this! Yes, I liked the author's other book, but she totally blew me away with this one. This book reads like a James Bond story. I could easily see this made into a movie.
The plot is based on the classic book by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, the Scarlet Pimpernel. But, unlike many retellings of historical classics, this one is a winner.
In this story, the reader first meets Claire, a genius and PhD candidate at UNLV. She has been manipulated to help in a criminal investment scam because of her OCD and genius abilities to read expressions and remember details.
The next character we meet is Jack. He's in town to shut down the scam and see that the guilty party behind it is arrested. However, he believes that Claire is somehow innocent in her involvement - that she's otherwise a good person. We're also introduced to several others that Jack works with and who are is "street team." He lives in a shadowy world of trust, illusion, and impersonations. However, even he is not prepared for his reaction to Claire.
What follows is an incredible tale of intrigue, magic, who-done-it, and, yes, romance that will leave you on the edge of your seat. And, finally, the next best thing to finishing this great story is that the author plans to write more on these same characters!

Sign me up for Book II!
By SallyBWT
Fans of the Scarlet Pimpernel, rejoice! We have a delightful, contemporary rehashing of that dashing daredevil and his mission to police the upper echelons of society! What if I told you that the Pimpernel's story didn't end in revolutionary France? It lived on, through his multitude of descendants, and exists in the present day. In today's modern world of corruption, social media, and technology, it takes a very different sort of Pimpernel to to keep watch on the 1% of the world's elite and wealthy.
Enter Jack, a handsome magician, with family and professional ties dating back centuries to the very first Pimpernel. Jack and his team are tasked with keeping the wealthy in check and preventing global financial catastrophes. As the book opens, Jack has his eye on Claire - a true genius and socially strained individual - who may or may not be performing one of the greatest global cons he has ever seen.
Claire, for her part, is desperate. She is desperate to finish her doctorate. Desperate to avoid dating the new guy down the hall. Desperately afraid of spiders, too. Add to that her OCD nature and conniving, social-climbing mother, and the girl already has it pretty rough. Oh, and then there's that other thing, that secret thing, she's doing that could very well destroy her life and the lives of the people she cares about. A mental breakdown is only seconds away.
This is a charming, fun story full of interesting information about magicians, facial tics, con artists, and romance. I found it way too short. And while there is a suspense/crime element to the story, I felt like it was a little underplayed - but I have an unhealthy admiration for con artists. Most readers who enjoy contemporary romance and detective TV shows will really like this. (Another reader likened it to the show Leverage.) The main characters are very interesting, with enough backstory given to make them worthy of compassion and character flaws/weaknesses that make them likeable. The secondary characters are also very intriguing and I am genuinely hoping that the author makes good on her promise in the last few pages to write a sequel. I'll read it!
